Marion County Police Records
Marion County police records come from two main agencies: the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD), which covers the consolidated city-county, and the Marion County Sheriff's Office, which handles court security, the jail, and unincorporated areas. You can search incident reports, arrest data, inmate records, and court filings through these agencies directly or through state-level portals. Indiana's most populous county has a range of public-facing tools to help you find what you need.
Marion County Quick Facts
Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department
The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, known as IMPD, is the primary law enforcement agency for Marion County. IMPD was created when Indianapolis and Marion County governments merged under Unigov in 1970, and the department today is one of the largest municipal police forces in the Midwest. IMPD officers patrol the consolidated city-county territory and respond to the vast majority of calls for service in the county. They maintain the bulk of incident-level police records generated in Marion County each year.
IMPD handles public records requests through its records management division. Incident reports, arrest reports, and other non-investigatory records can be requested in person at the IMPD Records Division or submitted in writing. IMPD operates out of multiple district stations across Indianapolis. The main administrative offices are connected to the City-County Building. For public records inquiries, contact IMPD through the City of Indianapolis public records process at the Indy.gov portal. Most requests follow the standard 7-day response window under Indiana Code IC 5-14-3.
IMPD also maintains a public-facing online crime reporting and data tool. You can find crime maps, incident summaries, and other data at the Indianapolis city website. This is useful for checking recent activity in a specific area of the county. Some incident data is published in aggregate form on a regular basis. For a specific incident report tied to a case number or date, a formal records request is the correct route.
Note: IMPD arrest data feeds into the Indiana State Police criminal history repository, so IMPD arrests appear in Limited Criminal History (LCH) searches run through the state portal.
Marion County Sheriff's Office
The Marion County Sheriff's Office operates separately from IMPD and has a different set of responsibilities. Sheriff Kerry Joseph Forestal heads the office, which is located at 40 S Alabama St, Indianapolis, IN 46204. The main phone number is 317-327-1700. The fax is 317-327-1315. Office hours run from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
The Marion County Sheriff oversees the county jail, court security, civil process serving, and law enforcement in areas not covered by IMPD. If someone is in custody at the Marion County jail rather than an IMPD holding facility, their booking information is tracked through the sheriff's office. The Marion County Sheriff's Office page on Indy.gov provides access to department information, public tools, and records contact details. An alternative website at marionso.com also carries sheriff's office information and links.

The Marion County Sheriff runs a secondary public-facing site that aggregates department resources in one place.
The marionso.com site shown above provides public-facing tools for inmate searches, civil process information, and department news. It is worth checking both the Indy.gov page and the marionso.com site when looking for specific information, as each may carry different content. For records requests, the Indy.gov channel is the official route.
How to Request Marion County Police Records
Marion County police records come from two separate agencies depending on who generated them. IMPD holds records from city police activity. The Marion County Sheriff holds records related to the jail, court operations, and civil enforcement. Know which agency you need before you submit a request. Sending your request to the wrong office will slow things down.
Under IC 5-14-3, any person can request public records from either agency. You do not need to give a reason. Both agencies must respond within 7 days. In-person requests tend to get faster responses for straightforward documents. Mail and email submissions are also accepted. Be specific: include dates, names, case numbers if you have them, and the record type. The more detail you provide, the faster the records staff can locate the file.
Some records are withheld under IC 5-14-3-4. Active investigation files, juvenile records, criminal intelligence information, and sealed court records are typically exempt. If your request is denied, you must receive a written explanation citing the specific exemption. You can bring a denied request to the Indiana Public Access Counselor for a free advisory opinion. That opinion can support a court challenge if you choose to go that route.
Body camera footage from IMPD and the Sheriff's Office falls under IC 5-14-3-5.1 and 5.2. Recordings must be kept at least 190 days. Requests must specify the date, approximate time, location, and at least one non-officer involved. Fees may apply for redaction work, often up to $150 per recording.

State Police Records Resources
The Indiana State Police maintains the statewide criminal history database under IC 10-13-2. A Limited Criminal History (LCH) search covers arrests and convictions reported by all Indiana agencies, including IMPD and the Marion County Sheriff. The fee is $15.70 by credit card or $7.00 by mail. Run an LCH through the ISP criminal history portal. Results reflect what Marion County agencies have reported to the state. LCH does not include records from other states or federal agencies.
The Indiana Sex and Violent Offender Registry is searchable by name, county, or zip code at no cost. Marion County has one of the larger registrant populations in the state. The registry is maintained by the Indiana Department of Correction under Zachary's Law, IC 11-8-8. For protection orders issued in Marion County, check the Indiana Protection Order Registry. It is free to search and linked to ISP's law enforcement systems. For APRA requests directed at state police records, use the ISP APRA portal.

Search by date, crash location, or party names. A nominal fee applies per report. If a crash occurred on a state highway within the county, the report may have been filed by an Indiana State Police trooper rather than a local officer. BuyCrash covers all of those as well.
